Tongue -Tie Assessment & Treatment with Breastfeeding Support

Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) is a condition where the thin piece of tissue under a baby’s tongue (the frenulum) is too tight or restrictive, affecting their ability to feed effectively. If left untreated, tongue-tie can cause ongoing breastfeeding and bottle-feeding challenges for both mother and baby. 


It can also affect babies who are bottle-feeding and the symptoms include  excess clicking, dribbling, coughing, choking and spluttering 


Common signs of tongue-tie


In Babies:

• Difficulty latching or staying latched

• Shallow latch Difficulty latching or staying latched

• Frequent or prolonged feeding sessions

• Sleepy feeds 

• Clicking sounds while feeding

• Reflux, colic, or excessive gassiness

• Poor weight gain or slow feeding

• Frustration or distress at the breast/bottle

• Dribbling, coughing, choking and spluttering on the bottle 


In Mothers:

• Painful, sore, or damaged nipples

• Low milk supply or engorgement due to ineffective feeding

• Recurrent blocked ducts or mastitis

• Blanched or wedge shaped nipple after feeding

• Feeling like feeding is a struggle


What to Expect from the Appointment

I provide a comprehensive tongue-tie assessment, division (if needed), and post-procedure breastfeeding support to help you and your baby feed comfortably.

1. Assessment – A thorough examination of your baby’s tongue tie, tongue function and feeding.

2. Discussion – We go over your baby’s symptoms and feeding history.

3. Explanation - I will explain the procedure and the risks and benefits of the procedure 

3. Treatment (Frenotomy) – If tongue-tie is confirmed and causing feeding issues, a quick and gentle division is performed. This is a safe and effective procedure that often leads to an immediate improvement in feeding.

4. Breastfeeding Support – Aftercare guidance and feeding support to ensure optimal healing and improved latch.

5. Follow up Telephone Call 


If you suspect your baby has a tongue-tie or is  struggling with breastfeeding, help is available. Early intervention can make a significant difference.
